How to Plan a Trip on Paper: Itinerary, Budget and Packing Lists
Planning a trip is easier when the details live on paper in one place: the bookings, the days, the budget and the packing. This guide shows how to use a printable travel planner from the first booking to the final pre-trip check.
Start with the overview and the bookings
The Travel Planner and Packing Lists Printable opens with a trip overview and a reservations and bookings log. The planner suggests filling in the overview and the bookings as you book, so the page stays current as the trip takes shape.
Plan the days
There are 7 daily itinerary pages, one for each day of a week-long trip. There are also pages for places to see and eat, where you can collect ideas before you decide which to use.
Keep an eye on the budget
The travel budget page has columns for planned versus actual, so you can write what you expect to spend and then record what you did spend. Doing it as you book keeps the numbers in one place instead of scattered across emails and receipts.
Use the packing lists
The planner suggests using the packing lists a week before you go. There are four lists:
- Clothes and gear
- Toiletries and health
- Tech and documents
- Kids and family
Cross off an item as you pack it, and the list shows what is left.
Checklists for the road and for the days before
For driving trips there is a road trip checklist. There is also a pre-trip countdown, an emergency contacts page and a notes page for anything else you want to remember. Keeping these in the same set means the details you might need on the road are not scattered across different places.
How it is meant to be used
- Download and print.
- Fill in the overview and bookings as you book.
- Use the packing lists a week before you go.
Printing and paper
Print one set per trip. The printable comes as two PDFs, US Letter and A4, with 21 pages each, single sided. Five color sets are included in the download: Classic Green, Ocean Blue, Charcoal Gray, Sunset Orange and Plum Purple. A folder keeps the pages together in a bag.
Try a free printable first
If you would like to try a printable planner page before buying, our Free Printable Samples page lists free pages you can download, and the Free Printables page has more. The free Meal Planner sample pages are one more printable you can try.
How the download works
This is a digital download. Nothing is shipped. Your download link appears on the order confirmation page and in your order email. The files are for personal use: print and use them for yourself and your household, and please do not resell, share or redistribute them. Because this is a digital product we cannot accept returns, but if a file will not open or something is wrong, contact us and we will make it right.
